PREVENTION

AVOID YOUR INJURIES BEFORE THEY START

Your body will be with you for your entire life. What we’ve discovered, through a multitude of research studies, is something you already know: your ability to move and interact with your world has profound effects on our mind, spirit, and social experiences (and vice versa). Just as you seek preventive care for your teeth or other aspects of your health, you need to care for the function of bodily movement: nerves, muscles, connective tissue (ligaments, tendons, etc) and bones.

You may have already noticed subtle changes in your movement abilities. Patients often report that their pain or injury was preceded by a subtle change in function or an intermittent discomfort that was “tolerable”. A large number of injuries occur slowly over time. Even an acute injury often can be attributed to an already existing underlying “weakness” in the function of the body’s system. The insidious onset of dysfunction and pain is typically the result of sub-optimal loading through our joints, imbalance between muscles, and lack of variety in movement.

Movement Screening

Your initial visit will begin with a discussion to establish your movement goals and to discuss any potential concerns that may be affecting those goals. We will follow this up with a physical assessment of how you move. Throughout your assessment I will identify potential movement gaps or abnormalities. The screening will also help us establish a baseline for us to measure change in your ability over the course of your care.

Rebalance

If I identify any imbalances or restrictions in your body, I will recommend hands-on, in-clinic treatments. If you are coming for your first assessment, this rebalancing treatment may be included. Depending on how your body responds you may require follow-up visits for in-clinic, hand-on treatments to help re-establish equilibrium in your body. Typically your prevention program will require infrequent in-clinic intervention, and we will discuss a treatment schedule that best accommodates your needs.

Reprogramming

As we work together, I will offer you a new level of consciousness regarding how you move and function. Implementing all the principles of Mindful Movement, I will custom-design appropriate, individualized injury prevention and performance exercise programs for you. My prevention programs are focused on introducing you to novel movements that will challenge your repetitive habits.

In addition, I welcome communication, input, and questions from your coaches/instructors, fitness professionals, or other health professionals. I encourage open dialogue to foster continuity in your movement care, both within and outside of the clinic.

Prevention principles can be applied through any movement program of your choice— PhysioYoga, Mindful Movement, or the Climbing Clinic.
